The Best Ways to Learn About Senior Living
By Julia Collins
Ruth and Fred London’s decision to move to Maris Grove, an Erickson Senior Living community in the Brandywine Valley of Pennsylvania, came together more quickly than expected. But the community’s friendly environment and attention to detail made them feel completely comfortable.
From warm greetings during campus tours to personalized appointments with sales team members, Maris Grove ensures that prospective residents feel welcome and supported every step of the way.
“We see ourselves more as guides than salespeople,” says Sales Associate Nicole Nance. “We take time to learn about each person’s needs, interests, and concerns, and then tailor their experience accordingly.”
See for yourself
Whether you’re just beginning to consider a retirement move or already envisioning yourself in a specific residence, Maris Grove offers several ways to learn more about its vibrant lifestyle.
A campus tour is a great place to start. “Our tours are relaxed and conversational. We encourage questions and let the community speak for itself,” says Nance.
Prospective residents can also attend introductory events that allow them to mingle with current residents, sample meals created by the Dining Services team, and speak with community staff. Nance notes that these gatherings often leave a lasting impression.
“Feedback usually includes words like authentic, friendly, and fun,” she says. “People get to see the laughter, connection, and sense of belonging that define daily life here.”
Ruth is among the many who have offered positive feedback. “I think the events are great. People enjoy them and really begin to feel like they’re part of the community before they move in,” she says.
Priority List perks
Joining the Priority List is often the next step. Members save their spot in line for a residence, receive invitations to exclusive social and educational events, and can sign up for a Live the Life stay.
The Live the Life program allows guests to stay overnight in a furnished suite, utilize amenities, join club meetings, dine at on-campus restaurants, and chat with current residents.
“Many members like to visit the fitness center and the art studio during their stay,” says Nance. “They love having genuine conversations with current residents and hearing their perspectives, too. It’s an unbeatable opportunity to test-drive Maris Grove’s lifestyle.”
Access to planning and moving support is another Priority List perk. The Londons appreciated working with Planning and Moving Consultant Jan Schechter, who visited their house to help them choose the best floor plan for them and prepare for their move.
Ruth and Fred also worked with one of Maris Grove’s preferred real estate agents. The couple’s house sold in a week–with three offers above asking price.
“They had the whole move figured out,” Ruth recalls. “They help with movers, packers, real estate agents–everything.”
The value of belonging
Now, Ruth volunteers as a resident ambassador, helping prospective and new residents get to know the community–the same way they were supported during their initial visits.
“I love working with the sales team. They’re excellent–very committed,” she says. “And I was recently touched when someone told me I was one of the reasons he and his wife chose to move here.”
Together, they’re making the most of their new worry-free lifestyle. Without the stress of costly home repairs, the couple has more time to enjoy the range of amenities and activities on campus.
“If something breaks or you need help–whether it’s a light bulb or something bigger–you just call General Services. It’s the little things like that, especially as you get older, that really matter,” explains Ruth.
She also praises the community’s pristine maintenance and lush landscaping–something she appreciates deeply as a former facilities manager. “I’m a stickler for maintenance. I value cleanliness. The level of care they put into the property is amazing,” she notes.
Don’t wait!
Ruth encourages anyone considering a move to join the Priority List.
“You get access to all the amenities and begin to feel like a part of the community,” she says. “Here, people reach out to you. You feel a real sense of belonging.”
That feeling, she adds, is rare in today’s world. “Even in our old neighborhood, people didn’t connect like this. You can’t put a price tag on feeling safe and cared for,” Ruth adds.
At Maris Grove, seemingly small details–the helpful staff, the engaging events, the warm smiles–add up to something much bigger: peace of mind, purpose, and the
joy of community.
“I tell people all the time, ‘It’s all the little things.’ And they really add up to big things,” says Ruth.
