Rare 1953 Oval Window Beetle Joins DFW Car & Toy Museum

The DFW Car & Toy Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, is showcasing a rare 1953 Volkswagen Beetle from the Ron Sturgeon Collection, hailed as one of the finest surviving examples of the iconic 'oval window' model. This particular Beetle is historically significant as the first true oval-window year and the lowest production year of its kind, making it a highly sought-after collector's item. Produced for only a few months, the 1953 Beetle served as a transitional model between the earlier split-window designs and the more streamlined Beetles of the latter half of the decade. Early versions, often called 'Zwitters,' share features with previous generations, but this example is a genuine oval, distinguished by its clean oval rear window and period-correct mechanicals.

Under the hood, the car retains its original 1131cc 25-horsepower flat-four engine, complete with a Solex 1-barrel carburetor, strap-over air filter, big-nut generator, 6-volt electrical system, round voltage regulator, and flat-top distributor—all accurate to factory specs. Power flows through a split-case four-speed transaxle, ensuring an authentic driving experience. Finished in a dignified grey, this Beetle runs and drives smoothly, telling a compelling story of post-World War II innovation and renewal.

Ron Sturgeon, founder of the museum, emphasizes the car's rarity and mechanical integrity, calling it a 'jewel' for Volkswagen enthusiasts. The Beetle is displayed among over 200 rare automobiles and 3,000 vintage toys and pop culture artifacts at the new 150,000-square-foot facility in North Fort Worth. The museum, formerly known as DFW Elite Toy Museum, offers free parking and admission, and its website remains a go-to resource for toy and car lovers.
