Logitech G Survey Reveals Strong Support for Esports Education Pathways

A new global study commissioned by Logitech G reveals that nearly two-thirds of people worldwide (65%) support more formal education pathways in esports and gaming for aspiring professionals, though significant generational and regional divides persist. The Logitech G PRO Series Survey, conducted by Censuswide with 18,000 respondents across 12 countries, found that over half (54%) of respondents globally now consider professional gaming a legitimate career path. However, acceptance varies sharply by age: while 67% of Gen Z and 60% of Millennials agree, only 37% of Baby Boomers do. Regional differences are striking as well—in China, 74% of Baby Boomers view it as legitimate, compared to just 20% in Germany. Derek Perez, Global Communications Gaming lead at Logitech G, emphasizes that the research highlights how far esports has come as a path to success, but more support is needed for younger generations.

The survey also reveals that professional gaming is still not seen as highly respectable compared to traditional careers—only 8% of respondents consider it respectable, on par with musicians (9%) and politicians (7%). Only 1% of Boomers and 3% of Gen X would encourage a young person to become a professional gamer. Yet, 40% say professional gaming is more aspirational now than a decade ago. Barriers include perceived financial risk (42%), industry competitiveness (34%), and lack of parental support (31%). Notably, 42% say it's still seen as a hobby. The physical and mental demands are recognized: 84% see it as mentally demanding, 55% as physically demanding. A third of respondents think gamers train 10-12 hours daily.

There is strong appetite for formal education: 47% believe schools should include esports classes in the curriculum, with support highest in Switzerland (73%), China (77%), and the USA (46%), but lower in the UK (32%) and Germany (29%). Globally, 65% want universities and colleges to offer esports career pathways. Respondents say more media coverage, professional training facilities (33%), transparency on earnings (32%), and inclusion in major sporting events (30%) would boost legitimacy.
