Hong Kong Universities Soar: Two in Top 20 of QS World Rankings

Hong Kong's higher education sector has achieved a historic milestone, with five universities ranking among the world's top 100 in the 2027 QS World University Rankings, and two breaking into the top 20 for the first time. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held steady at 11th, while The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) surged 14 places to 18th. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology rose to 33rd, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University entered the top 50 at 50th, and City University of Hong Kong climbed to 52nd. QS hailed Hong Kong as Asia's most improved higher education system for the second consecutive year, and the second most improved globally among systems with three or more ranked universities.

A spokesman for Hong Kong's Education Bureau (EDB) attributed these achievements to the HKSAR Government's steadfast investment in education and support through the University Grants Committee (UGC), which has enabled institutions to continuously innovate and enhance quality. The rankings follow the latest Best Global Universities Rankings by U.S. News & World Report, where Hong Kong universities placed 20 subjects in the global top 10, with CUHK, HKU, and The Education University of Hong Kong sweeping the top three spots in 'Education and Educational Research'. The EDB spokesman emphasized that the stellar performance is no accident, relying on tireless efforts to recruit world-class scholars and invest in infrastructure, alongside stable government resource investment and rigorous quality assurance.

The Government is furthering its commitment through measures such as raising the admission ceiling for non-local students to 50% and increasing over-enrolment for research postgraduate programmes to 120%. It is also promoting the 'Study in Hong Kong' brand via the Task Force on Study in Hong Kong, expanding initiatives like the Belt and Road Scholarship to attract global talent.
