Hong Kong Cinema Shines at Cannes 2026, Expanding Global Co-Production

“Hong Kong Cinema @ CANNES 2026” is in full swing at the Cannes Film Festival from May 12 to 23, organized by the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Cultural, Sports and Tourism Bureau (CSTB), the Hong Kong Film Development Council (FDC), the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA), and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). The event aims to deepen industry exchange and expand co-production and investment opportunities, showcasing Hong Kong’s role as an East-meets-West center for international cultural exchange and a regional intellectual property (IP) trading hub. Key highlights include the “Hong Kong Night” on May 16 at Majestic Beach, which gathered around 600 international film professionals, including producers, distributors, and investors, alongside Hong Kong actors Carlos Chan and Natalie Hsu. The Hong Kong Pavilion at the Marché du Film features major production and distribution companies such as Edko Films, Emperor Motion Pictures, Entertaining Power, Media Asia Film, One Cool Film, and others, presenting a slate of films like Edko’s Cold War 1994, Entertaining Power’s The Fruitless Tree, Media Asia’s Twilight of the Warriors: The Final Chapter, and One Cool’s The Trier of Fact.

Industry seminars and pitching sessions further bolstered networking and collaboration. A seminar titled “Capital Flows & Co-Production Opportunities in Hong Kong, Asia and Beyond” explored funding trends, while “Hong Kong Power: The ground-breaking AI ecosystem building cinema, technology and research” featured Mei Ah Entertainment and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts discussing AI in filmmaking. The new “Spotlight on Hong Kong: Pitching Session” introduced emerging producers and winning teams from the FDC’s Content Development Scheme for Streaming Platforms, including Kingman Cho, Li Ling Long, and Tsang Tsui Shan. First-ever business matching meetings connected Hong Kong delegates with international organizations like Cinecittà (Italy), FDCP (Philippines), ICEX Spain, KOFIC (Korea), Telefilm Canada, CNC (France), Cinema do Brasil, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, and Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Fund, fostering co-production and cross-regional partnerships.
