Gerresheimer Doubles Injectable Packaging Capacity in China

Gerresheimer, a global partner to the pharma, biotech, and cosmetic industries, has started operations at a new state-of-the-art plant in Zhenjiang Dagang, China, doubling its production capacity for primary packaging for injectable pharmaceuticals in the country. The facility, built over four years, spans 40,000 m² in the Zhenjiang Economic Development Zone and meets stringent regulatory requirements. With a workforce of about 250 employees and plans for 50 more jobs, the plant produces borosilicate glass vials and ampoules primarily for the Chinese market. This expansion builds on a successful 20-year joint venture with Shuangfeng Glass, now operating four tubular glass plants in China.

The new plant is equipped with intelligent production and logistics systems, including ISO Class 8 cleanrooms and a Class 7 microbiological laboratory, ensuring compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Sustainability is a key focus: the facility follows China's 'Green Factory' guidelines and aims for LEED Gold certification. A 2-MWp rooftop photovoltaic system generates on-site renewable electricity, while water recycling and exhaust heat recovery reduce resource consumption. These measures support Gerresheimer's ambitious sustainability goals.

According to Mehran Nilchian, Global Senior Vice President of Tubular Glass, the plant addresses dynamic market growth in injectable biologics across China and the Asia-Pacific region.
