Robert B. Payne Heating & Air: Fredericksburg Averages 18.9% of HDD Pre-December
Only 18.9% of normal heating degree days fall before December at the weather station nearest Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg, United States - October 22, 2026 / Robert B. Payne Heating & Air /
Across Virginia's 125 normals stations, the share of normal HDD that falls after Christmas Day (Dec 26-Jun 30) ranges from 63.2% to 70.3%.
Only 18.9% of a normal season's heating degree days (HDD) accumulate before December (Jul 1-Nov 30) at Fredericksburg's nearest-station proxy, Fredericksburg Sewage (USC00443204). At the Fredericksburg proxy station, 66.4% of normal HDD falls after Christmas Day (Dec 26-Jun 30), according to Robert B. Payne Heating & Air's analysis of the 1991-2020 U.S. Climate Normals.
A heating degree day (HDD) is a temperature-based index of heating need, using a base of 65°F. The analysis uses the 1991-2020 daily normals for 125 Virginia stations with complete daily HDD curves. These 30-year normals describe a climatological average season and do not forecast this winter. HDD does not measure equipment run time, fuel use, household energy consumption or bills.
Key findings from the 125-station analysis:
- Fredericksburg proxy: 16.8% of the station's normal HDD accrues by Thanksgiving, measured from Jul 1-Nov 26 inclusive. Nov 26 is Thanksgiving 2026.
- Before December: Across Virginia's 125 normals stations, the Jul 1-Nov 30 share of normal HDD ranges from 15.4% at Eastville to 23.8% at Burkes Garden. The unweighted station median is 19.9%.
- By Thanksgiving: Across Virginia's 125 normals stations, the Jul 1-Nov 26 share of normal HDD ranges from 13.4% at Eastville to 21.9% at Burkes Garden. The unweighted station median is 17.8%.
- After Christmas Day: Across Virginia's 125 normals stations, the Dec 26-Jun 30 share of normal HDD ranges from 63.2% at Burkes Garden to 70.3% at Eastville. The unweighted station median is 65.6%.
- Halfway dates: Across Virginia's 125 normals stations, the dates for reaching half of cumulative normal HDD from Jul 1 range from Jan 16 to Jan 24. The unweighted median station date is Jan 18.
Local station results, as share through Nov 30 (Jul 1-Nov 30) / share through Thanksgiving (Jul 1-Nov 26) / share after Christmas Day (Dec 26-Jun 30) / halfway date. Each share is a proportion of the named station's own Jul 1-Jun 30 normal-HDD total. All windows are inclusive. The halfway date marks the midpoint of cumulative normal HDD on that station's averaged curve.

"The holiday calendar is a familiar reference point, and these station averages show why it helps to look beyond it," said Justin "JC" Brooks, service manager at Robert B. Payne Heating & Air. "Keep the months after the holidays in mind when planning seasonal upkeep. The station data can only give you the weather context."
In late October, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day offer familiar reference points for explaining the normal temperature pattern. Readers can compare the holiday cutoffs for named local stations and see where those dates fall on each station's normal-HDD curve. The release timing is an editorial peg; the analysis does not identify when the heating season begins.
At Eastville station, 70.3% of normal HDD falls in Dec 26-Jun 30, totaling 2,543.5 HDD. At Burkes Garden station, 63.2% falls in the same inclusive window, totaling 3,771.6 HDD. A larger share of a station's annual normal does not necessarily mean a larger HDD total for that window.
Big Meadows station has the largest annual normal-HDD total in the 125-station analysis, at 6,580.2 HDD. Its normal-HDD curve reaches halfway on Jan 21.
Dulles and Reagan National stations share a Jan 19 normal-HDD halfway date. For Dec 26-Jun 30, Dulles has a 66.0% normal-HDD share and Reagan National has a 67.8% share.
At the Shenandoah Valley's Staunton WTP station, 65.5% of normal HDD falls in Dec 26-Jun 30. At Winchester station, the share for the same inclusive window is 65.7%. Both stations reach halfway through cumulative normal HDD on Jan 19. These are separate station results.
The earliest normal-HDD halfway date in the analysis is a tie: Ashland, Buchanan, Brookneal, Danville Rgnl AP and Louisa all reach it on Jan 16.
How the analysis was done:
- Data: Calculations use the U.S. Climate Normals 1991-2020 daily HDD normals, base 65°F, for 125 Virginia stations with complete daily HDD curves. Each station's annual normal is summed over Jul 1-Jun 30 on the 365-day normal calendar, with Feb 29 excluded. Each share divides the window's normal-HDD sum by that station's own annual normal-HDD total.
- Windows: All windows are inclusive: before December is Jul 1-Nov 30; through Thanksgiving is Jul 1-Nov 26, using Thanksgiving 2026; after Christmas Day is Dec 26-Jun 30. Dec 1-25 sits between the principal windows. The through-Nov-30 and Dec-26-onward shares are not complements. Medians are unweighted station medians. Halfway is the first date when cumulative normal HDD from Jul 1 reaches at least half of the station's annual normal total.
- Fredericksburg proxy: Fredericksburg has no first-order airport station. The nearest-station proxy is Fredericksburg Sewage (station USC00443204), about a mile from an analyst-selected downtown Fredericksburg reference point. It does not measure Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline or King George counties, or any individual home.
- Coverage and flags: Station coverage is uneven; no population-weighted, area-weighted or regional-average figure was calculated. The normals' completeness flags S, R and E were retained, including R normals built from shorter records and E normals that are estimated. The Fredericksburg proxy is R-flagged. Excluding E-flagged stations leaves the range endpoints unchanged; uncertainty associated with shorter R records remains.
- Precision: Rankings are descriptive at displayed precision, ties are grouped, and no statistical significance is implied. Changing the 65°F base would change the shares and could shift milestone dates. Monthly normals, which derive from the daily normals, provided an internal consistency check.
- Caveat: Milestone dates are points on the 1991-2020 averaged normal curve. The normals are not a forecast for this winter, and HDD does not measure equipment run time or household energy consumption.
