What MacKenzie Scott’s $63 Million Gift Means For Morgan State University
When philanthropist MacKenzie Scott gave Morgan State University a $63 million unrestricted donation, her second major donation in less than five years, it was more than a philanthropic gift. It was a vote of confidence in Morgan’s leadership, institutional trajectory, and values. To date, Scott has given the Baltimore-based HBCU $103 million, which shows considerable trust in how much the institution has grown under the leadership of President David K. Wilson.
Wilson is in his fifteenth year as president and has led one of the most transformative periods in Morgan’s 158-year history. The institution achieved record enrollments, created dozens of new degree programs, and has increased its research arm substantially, with Morgan poised to become the first public HBCU, and only the second HBCU overall, to earn the Carnegie R1 classification for very high research activity.
