The Best Ways to Learn About Senior Living

By Kelly Shue

With friends living at Linden Ponds, an Erickson Senior Living community in Hingham, Mass., it was on the top of Jeff and Judy Kalla’s list when they decided to move from their house in Scituate, Mass.

“But it was important to us to experience the community, spending time on campus and talking with current residents, before making a final decision,” says Judy. And they had plenty of opportunities to do so.

From personalized appointments to informational events and group tours, Linden Ponds invites prospective residents to explore the campus at their own pace–with no pressure.

“Every time we visited campus, the residents were warm and welcoming, and we never felt any pressure from the sales team to make a decision. It was a very good experience,” Judy recalls.

“We want to give people all the information they need to help them determine whether Linden Ponds is the right fit for them,” notes Sales Director Susan Sheehan. “That’s the most important thing!”

Exploring their options
The Kallas started considering their senior living options several years ago. “At the time, we were thinking that a move was some time in the future,” says Jeff.

But the couple understood the importance of researching and planning ahead, so when they received an invitation to an informational luncheon at Linden Ponds, they gladly accepted.

“That’s when we met Sales Counselor Karmin Der. She was extremely helpful,” says Jeff.

“Karmin showed us whatever we wanted and had a really good grasp of what we were looking for,” adds Judy.

Following the luncheon, Jeff and Judy reached out to the sales team with additional questions.

“Everyone on the sales team was very accommodating. We would call and ask questions as they came up, and they answered honestly and without pressure,” Jeff notes.

Frequent visitors
Impressed with everything they saw and learned at the luncheon, Jeff and Judy were eager to explore the community further, so they joined the Priority List.

In addition to saving their spot in line for a future residence, Priority List members receive invitations to exclusive social and informational events on campus.

“We wanted to spend time on campus and interact with some of the residents,” says Judy. “With that in mind, the garden party luncheon was key.”

The annual garden party luncheon and tour allowed the Kallas to socialize amidst the community’s beautiful garden patches–teeming with flowers and veggies–that residents tend to.

“It was lovely to see so many people enjoying the gardens with their neighbors. In our former house, we had half an acre that we enjoyed taking care of. It was nice to know that we could get a garden patch and continue spending time this way,” says Jeff.

The Kallas also found the tour of current residents’ homes to be helpful, as it allowed them to envision what their future living space could look like.

“Seeing a variety of lived-in homes helped us choose the Jackson floor plan,” says Judy. “Once I walked into one of the homes, I noticed the five large windows. There was so much light. Both of us had the same feeling–this is the home we wanted. I also appreciated the opportunity to see how people personalized their living space.”

Live the Life
While Jeff and Judy learned a lot during their visits, their Live the Life stay was especially impactful.
The Live the Life program–another perk of the Priority List–allows members to stay overnight in a furnished guest suite, utilize amenities, join club meetings, dine at on-campus restaurants, and chat with current residents.

During their stay, Jeff attended the men’s discussion group and visited the woodshop while Judy checked out the nature and photography groups.

Together, they dined with current residents, walked around campus, and joined the Born in the ’50s group, where they met many peers with shared experiences.

Seeing everything the community had to offer, “We wanted to move to Linden Ponds when we were young and able to establish new relationships,” says Jeff.

Since their move to Linden Ponds in March, they’ve been able to do just that.

“Everyone is so warm and welcoming,” says Judy. “One time, we met a woman who said, ‘I may never get to heaven, but this is close enough.’ She was right. We are so glad we moved to Linden Ponds! We are very happy.”
