Marquis Who's Who Honors Sophie Bidek for Expertise in Architecture

Ms. Bidek is a distinguished managing partner at Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture in Chicago, specializing in large-scale mixed-use development. With over two decades of experience, she has established herself as an expert in the field, overseeing complex projects such as the One Chicago Project, a 2.2 million square foot mixed-use, multi-tower development. She is involved in managing the executive functions of the firm, handling invoicing and billing, and overseeing a team of 20 architects. Additionally, she focuses on professional staff development and has worked on adaptive reuse and historic preservation projects, including the conversion of the Shriner's Clubhouse in Waco, Texas, into a boutique hotel.
Ms. Bidek's career began with her first paying job at an architecture firm in Virginia during high school. She later served as an architectural staff member at Urban Design Group in the Greater Chicago Area from 1999 to 2000. Following this role, she became a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Architecture from 2001 to 2003. In 2003, she joined Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture, where she has been instrumental in the firm's growth and success.
Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in architectural studies from the University of Illinois Chicago in 2001 and a Master of Architecture from the same institution in 2003. Ms. Bidek holds several certifications that have bolstered her career, including Construction Documents Technologist and EDP certification, both from the Construction Specifications Institute, and LEED AP Building Design + Construction from the U.S. Green Building Council. She is also a registered architect in the State of Illinois and a certified Pilates instructor.
In addition to her professional achievements, Ms. Bidek is actively involved in civic organizations. She has served as board president for the CREW Career Program at CREW Chicago since 2011 and volunteers as a mentor at Virginia Tech. Her accolades include being named one of The Top 50 Women Leaders of Chicago for 2024 by Women We Admire and receiving multiple design awards, such as the 2024 Design Award for Hotel 1928 from the Texas Society of Architects and the 2023 Design Excellence award for One Chicago from AIA Chicago.
Ms. Bidek has also contributed to industry literature with publications like "Lasalle Street Building a Thriving Future" for ULI Chicago in 2022 and "Conversions to Residential: Land Use and Architectural Issues to Consider" for Commercial Property Review in 2020.
Ms. Bidek attributes her success to hard work, perseverance, preparedness, seizing opportunities and fearlessly stepping up. She values guidance from mentors and sponsors and believes in assisting others to achieve their goals.
Outside of her professional life, Ms. Bidek enjoys teaching reformer Pilates, spending time with her cats, reading, cooking, baking and going for long walks or bike rides. She is committed to increasing the representation of women in leadership positions within architecture and commercial real estate industries. Additionally, she aims to work on more ambitious large-scale mixed-use projects and pursue international opportunities while continuing to mentor individuals and teach fundamental courses at architecture schools.
