Maria Gonzalez Shares Her Journey from Childhood Abandonment to Finding Her Own Worth in Still Standing
LAREDO, TX, November 04, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Who looks after the person who has spent her whole life looking after everyone else? For Maria G. Gonzalez, answering that question took years of painful experiences, difficult relationships, health struggles, and moments when she wondered where she truly belonged.
In her memoir, Still Standing: My Story of Faith, Strength, and Finding Myself, Gonzalez shares the personal experiences that shaped her understanding of love, family, faith, and self-worth. Published independently on August 7, 2026, the book is available on Amazon in Kindle and paperback formats.
Her story begins in Laredo, Texas, where she was born and left in the care of relatives shortly after birth. At around five years old, Gonzalez learned that her biological mother had not chosen to raise her. It was a painful realization for a young girl who would spend much of her life wondering why being loved seemed so difficult.
By age ten, Gonzalez was already handling responsibilities many adults find overwhelming. Financial hardship, unstable housing, and her mother's recurring illnesses meant that cooking, cleaning, and caregiving became part of her childhood.
She dreamed of attending college, joining the military, and creating opportunities for herself. But there was always someone who needed her help.
One experience remained especially painful: nobody attended her high school graduation.
A Daughter Who Changed Her Understanding of Love
Years later, the birth of her daughter, Ale, encouraged Gonzalez to make different choices.
She wanted her daughter to experience affection, encouragement, and the comfort of knowing her mother would show up. Their relationship became an important part of Gonzalez's journey, especially after her earlier struggles with depression and self-harm.
However, motherhood did not make her emotional difficulties disappear. She continued facing loneliness, complicated family relationships, and questions about her own identity.
When ongoing health problems later affected her mobility, eyesight, and independence, another challenge emerged. The woman who had always been the caregiver suddenly needed assistance herself.
"Receiving help requires strength, too," Gonzalez writes.
Faith Helped Her Ask Different Questions
Catholic faith occupies a meaningful place in Gonzalez's life. Following an ACTS retreat, she began reconsidering the anger and questions she had carried about God.
Her connection with Divine Mercy and the prayer "Jesus, I trust in You" helped her approach difficult experiences with a changing perspective.
The memoir also examines forgiveness, especially the realization that releasing anger does not mean allowing harmful relationships to continue.
Instead of measuring love by how much she could sacrifice, Gonzalez began learning to establish healthier boundaries.
Why Readers May Connect With Still Standing
Alongside her personal experiences, Gonzalez includes journal questions, affirmations, and prayers designed to encourage readers to examine their own lives.
The book addresses several experiences readers may recognize:
• Growing up too soon: Carrying family responsibilities before having the chance to enjoy childhood.
• Searching for acceptance: Learning to separate genuine affection from the pressure to please others.
• Giving without losing yourself: Understanding the importance of healthy personal boundaries.
• Finding comfort in faith: Turning to prayer without pretending life's problems have disappeared.
• Making room for personal dreams: Recognizing that caring for others should not mean abandoning your own aspirations.
Rather than offering an easy formula for recovery, Gonzalez acknowledges that her own healing remains unfinished.
She still hopes to complete her theology degree, travel to the Holy Land and Greece, enjoy photography, and create more experiences with her family.
"I survived for a long time. Now I want memories of living," she writes.
