Churches of Scientology Disaster Response collaborates with National Disaster Organizations to help survivors in Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa

WASHINGTON, DC, November 26, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- As Hurricane Melissa bore down on the island of Jamaica in October, National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (www.nvoad.org) organizations were already teaming up to bring survivors relief.

Operation BBQ Relief (www.operationbbqrelief.org), a US disaster non-profit organization, knew ahead of time that meals for survivors would be vital and that they needed teams of volunteers in Florida to pack and ship thousands of meals to Jamaica to be distributed to families facing hunger and food insecurity.

Working with the Operation BBQ Relief executives, Joava Good, Deputy National Director of Churches of Scientology Disaster Response (CSDR) (www.csdr-us.org) offered the help of her volunteers.

Operation BBQ Relief executives and volunteers from around the country teamed up with CSDR Volunteer Ministers (www.volunteerministers.org) from the Clearwater, Florida, area. The Volunteer Ministers worked alongside other volunteers, including many from local government agencies and schools, and prepared thousands of boxes filled with life-saving food.

For hundreds of man hours, the volunteers packed non-perishable food in the huge Pinellas Park warehouse which was supplied with forklifts, pallet jacks and special tables provided by Amazon. All the foodstuffs were packed in two different box sizes containing enough nutritious food to sustain a family of four for either three days (36 meals) or six days (72 meals).

Doyle Mills, CSDR national executive, who coordinated the Scientology volunteers, stated:

"An operation like this may look simple but it is not. An amazing amount of logistical planning and work went into the operation these past few weeks, much of it behind the scenes. Working with Operation BBQ Relief was a joy and a wonderful experience knowing that the end result would be helping those devastated by Hurricane Melissa.

"It was a loud, fast-paced machine manned by all the volunteers labeling, assembling and taping boxes; opening pallets of food; transporting food to the assembly line; putting food into the boxes; sealing boxes; loading boxes onto pallets; transporting completed pallets to the plastic wrap station; and doing clean up and trash removal.

"We transported some of the boxes straight to the airport and loaded them into small planes for quick transport, while the larger portion was loaded onto trucks and driven to Miami to be transported by large cargo aircraft.

"It was a challenge but we did it and over 270,000 meals were shipped out.

"What made the overall operation successful was collaboration – working together side-by-side to get the product. Hard work, yes, but we had fun knowing we were helping those in need. It was an honor to work with the Operation BBQ's team."

While immediate disaster response activities to Jamaica are winding down, hundreds of more volunteers will be needed to address the next phase of recovery and rebuilding of the destroyed areas.

Churches of Scientology Disaster Response (www.csdr-us.org) is a US-based non-profit disaster response organization incorporated in Washington, DC. It has over 25 offices around the country helping to coordinate local and regional responses with government agencies and other National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) organizations.
