Operation Turn the Page: Giving Books to Unlock Futures

The Marine Toys for Tots Literacy Program is kicking off its annual back-to-school initiative, Operation Turn the Page, to ensure that children in low-income communities have access to books and educational resources during the summer months. This program, which has distributed over 63 million books since 2008, aims to combat summer learning loss and prepare students for academic success. According to Lieutenant General Jim Laster, U.S. Marines (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, "A single book may seem like a small gift, but for a child impacted by summer learning loss, it can open the door to possibilities they never knew existed." The initiative distributes books to schools and organizations, with recent events at Freedom Trail Elementary, United Elementary, and Entheos Academy showcasing the positive impact on students. For instance, at United Elementary, over 400 books were given to students, sparking excitement and a love for reading both at school and at home. Teachers have noted that receiving books often leads to the creation of a child's first home library and fosters a lifelong passion for learning.
