Ken Diaz Receives Inaugural Community Impact Legacy Award at Chicano Hollywood Film Festival

The Chicano Hollywood Film Festival has announced that Oscar-nominated makeup artist and character designer Ken Diaz will be the inaugural recipient of the Community Impact Legacy Award, presented by Pure Flix Familia. This new honor, created by Great American Media's upcoming Spanish-language faith and family entertainment platform, celebrates individuals who exemplify faith, servant leadership, and a lifelong commitment to strengthening families and communities. The award was presented during the festival's Closing Night Awards Ceremony, with Johnny Murillo, founder of the festival, praising Diaz for his off-screen impact: 'His story reflects the values this award was created to recognize — faith, redemption, service and a commitment to helping others discover hope and purpose.'

Ken Diaz's journey is one of transformation and redemption. In 1991, he was shot in the leg after confronting gang members, leading to a spiritual awakening that reshaped his life and career. He became involved in a church in Pico Rivera, working with former gang members and discovering the power of faith and forgiveness. This experience influenced his acclaimed work on films like Blood In Blood Out, American Me, and Training Day, where he brought authenticity to portrayals of gang life. Today, Diaz serves on the Advisory Board of Homeboy Industries, the world's largest gang intervention and rehabilitation program, and through Homeboy Media, he helps create pathways into the entertainment industry for formerly incarcerated individuals.
