Hong Kong AI Firms Shine at WAIC 2026, Bridging Global Innovation

At the recent 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) showcased 18 leading AI enterprises from Hong Kong, highlighting the region's role as a bridge between China and global innovation. The Hong Kong Tech Pavilion, organized in collaboration with Cyberport, HKSTP, and HSITP, featured solutions in intelligent robotics, smart city technologies, cybersecurity, and enterprise intelligence. HKTDC executives emphasized their commitment to helping startups expand into international markets and foster collaboration. The conference also included a seminar on AI economic innovation, where HKSAR Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Prof Sun Dong, outlined Hong Kong's strategy to become an international I&T center under the 'One Country, Two Systems' framework. The event facilitated business matching and networking, with the 'My Favourite Start-up Award' going to AI SEMI Limited for its AI-OPC technology in semiconductor manufacturing. The HKTDC continues to support Hong Kong tech firms at major global events like CES, MWC, and Viva Technology, reinforcing its role in promoting cross-border AI collaboration.

The presence of Hong Kong at WAIC underscores the city's unique strengths in AI governance and industrial application, aligning with President Xi Jinping's call for a fair global AI governance framework. HKTDC's Jacky Chung noted that as AI moves from R&D to large-scale deployment, Hong Kong will leverage its advantages to support Mainland enterprises in going global. The pavilion not only showcased cutting-edge technologies but also facilitated deeper ties between Hong Kong and Mainland China, with activities like a visit to a Shanghai incubator and a roundtable with Xuhui District enterprises. This initiative is part of the HKTDC's broader strategy to position Hong Kong as a key player in the global AI ecosystem, fostering innovation and collaboration across borders.

The 18 participating startups covered diverse categories: Workplace & Enterprise Solutions (e.g., AI SEMI, Oxtak, JiHu GitLab), Smart City & Infrastructure (e.g., Sengine Technology, Stellerus), Robotics & Automation (e.g., Orion Arm HK, NineRay), and Finance, Legal & Cybersecurity (e.g., Eaglecloud, 221b). These firms represent the vanguard of Hong Kong's AI innovation, and their exposure at WAIC is expected to attract international investors and partners.
