Greenhut Construction Celebrates 80 Years of Building Northwest Florida

Greenhut Construction Company, a family-owned general contracting and construction management firm based in Pensacola, Florida, is marking its 80th anniversary in 2026, making it one of the longest-running construction companies in Northwest Florida. Founded in 1946 by Dudley Greenhut, the company now operates under third-generation president Ryan Greenhut. Its portfolio spans healthcare, education, aviation, industrial, office, and community development sectors, with landmark projects including Pensacola International Airport facilities, ST Engineering MRO Hangars 1 & 2, Leonardo MRO Hangar, a portion of the Navy Federal Credit Union campus, the American Magic Pensacola port headquarters, Myrtle Grove Elementary School, and hotels along Pensacola Beach. Notably, 80% of the company’s work comes from repeat clients, underscoring its strong reputation and client relationships.

Surviving eight decades in the cyclical and capital-intensive construction industry is rare. Greenhut Construction has weathered multiple recessions, hurricanes, the 2010 oil spill, and the COVID-19 pandemic—conditions that ended or significantly contracted many peers. Ryan Greenhut attributes the company’s durability to adaptability and humility. “We have been through financial recessions, we have been through hurricanes and storms and oil spills that have wrecked the economy, we have been through a pandemic,” he said. “Our ability to adapt – and our team’s ability to adapt to any kind of new type of construction – is what has carried us through. If we see a reduction in healthcare markets, we can move into aerospace work.” This adaptability is paired with a commitment to earning the company’s reputation daily rather than relying on its history.

The company’s evolution from handshake deals under Dudley Greenhut to a construction management model under his son Bill, and now to a diversified portfolio under Ryan, highlights its strategic growth. Greenhut Construction operates almost exclusively within Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, a deliberate choice that sharpens its competitive focus. Looking ahead, the company has projects in the pipeline including performing arts theaters at two area high schools, Gulf Winds Credit Union headquarters, and UWF Building 129.
