Duisburg China Festival 2026 Opens with Wuhan Gala, Strengthening Sino-German Ties

The 2026 Duisburg China Festival commenced on Friday in Duisburg, Germany, marking a vibrant celebration of cultural exchange between Chinese and German cities. The three-day event, which runs through Sunday, features an array of cultural booths and interactive zones that showcase traditional Chinese cuisine, culture, and contemporary art. The opening gala, held on Friday evening, was a spectacular presentation by nearly 40 artists from Wuhan, the capital of central China's Hubei Province. These performers delivered more than a dozen diverse programs, including Peking opera, Hanju opera, Chuju opera, acrobatics, and ethnic song and dance, offering a rich tapestry of Chinese performing arts.

The festival serves as a vivid expression of the enduring friendship between China and Germany, according to Chang Haitao, acting consul general of the Chinese Consulate General in Dusseldorf. He emphasized that such events allow Germans to experience and understand China up close. The sister-city relationship between Duisburg and Wuhan, established in 1982 as the first such partnership between Germany and China, has been a cornerstone of bilateral ties, fostering close people-to-people and economic exchanges. Duisburg Mayor Soeren Link, impressed by the performance's standard, quality, and richness, described the gala as unforgettable. He reiterated Duisburg's commitment to strengthening the sister-city relationship and promoting German-Chinese friendship and dialogue. Markus Teuber, commissioner for China affairs at the Mayor's Office, noted that the performances offered German audiences an excellent window into Chinese culture and expressed hopes for deepened cultural exchange. Yang Jing, deputy director of the Wuhan Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, highlighted that Wuhan's participation marks an important step in Wuhan culture's global outreach.
