Congressman Menendez Joins Students to Combat Opioid Abuse in Union City

Congressman Menendez and St. Francis Academy students distribute opioid awareness flyers in Union City for the 11th Annual Day to Combat Opioid Abuse, organized by PDFNJ.

The opioid epidemic continues to devastate communities across New Jersey and the nation, with over 1,300 suspected overdose deaths in 2025 alone. The Day to Combat Opioid Abuse highlights the critical role of education and community involvement in prevention. By engaging young students in distributing information, the initiative fosters intergenerational conversations that can save lives. With a 27% decrease in overdose deaths from 2024, progress is being made, but the rise in deaths among older adults underscores the need for targeted outreach. This event demonstrates that combating the opioid crisis requires a collective effort from all sectors of society, and it empowers individuals to take action in their own neighborhoods.
