Connecticut Sees Surge In Human Trafficking Cases

NORTH HAVEN, CT, March 04, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Human trafficking is on the rise, despite efforts to eliminate it. Over the past five years, numerous laws have been passed to improve victim advocacy and the detection of traffickers. This legislation has enabled more criminal prosecutions. In January 2026, the United States Department of Justice published the Bureau of Justice Statistics' annual report on human trafficking. It shows a 73% increase in the number of persons prosecuted for human trafficking between 2013 and 2023. Despite these efforts, the Department of Homeland Security has expressed facing challenging tamping down on forced labor.

Connecticut has not been immune to human trafficking. Since its inception in 2007, the National Human Trafficking Hotline reports having received 2,167 notifications of human trafficking in Connecticut alone. These notifications have led to over 1,000 victim identifications and the opening of hundreds of cases. Yet human trafficking continues to persist. The Regional Human Trafficking Recovery Taskforce (RHTRT), an organization supporting survivors in the Greater Hartford, CT area, has released data showing that human trafficking investigations have increased 200% since 2022. In January 2026, an arrest was made in East Hartford, CT. This comes on the heels of a multi-task force effort in Hartford in September 2025 that busted a sex-trafficking ring allegedly luring teenage girls on social media. While these cases are still ongoing, they reflect the prevalence of human and sex trafficking in the Constitution State.
