1985 Pontiac Fiero GT: America's Mid-Engine Underdog Joins the DFW Car & Toy Museum

FORT WORTH, TX, December 09, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The DFW Car & Toy Museum is proud to introduce a retro-futuristic icon to its ever-growing lineup: a 1985 Pontiac Fiero GT, now on display as part of The Ron Sturgeon Collection. With just 60,000 original miles and a bold red finish, this mid-engine American classic captures the spirit of 1980s performance innovation in a compact, rebellious package.

Built during a brief but unforgettable chapter in GM history, the Fiero GT was Pontiac's bold answer to the growing demand for affordable, sporty, and futuristic vehicles. This example, first registered in Alaska and Indiana and acquired by its current owner in 2014, is a remarkably well-preserved reminder of a car that dared to be different.

At its heart lies a 2.8-liter L44 V6, factory-rated at 130 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque, mated to a three-speed automatic transaxle that drives the rear wheels. The mid-engine layout—a rarity in American cars of the era—delivered balanced handling and an exotic driving feel, wrapped in a package with everyday drivability.

Finished in factory Red (71), this Fiero GT features pop-up headlights, a vented engine lid, an asymmetrical quarter-panel vent, rear spoiler, fog lights, and a removable sunroof, blending sharp lines with practical performance features. Power-assisted disc brakes at all four corners help keep things in control.

Inside, the cabin continues the '80s vibes with power windows, a Pioneer head unit, and even headrest speakers—a hallmark of the GT trim. The leather-wrapped steering wheel fronts a driver-focused gauge cluster with an 85-mph speedometer, 6,500-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, fuel level, voltage, and oil pressure.

"The Fiero GT has always been an automotive outlier, and that's exactly why I love it," says Ron Sturgeon, founder of the DFW Car & Toy Museum. "It's mid-engine, American, sporty, and full of character—and this one is about as clean as you'll find."

Though its production run was short, the Fiero left a lasting mark—and this low-mileage 1985 GT offers a rare opportunity to see one in well-preserved, nearly original condition.
